Older woman with healthy smile Dental insurance is an excellent tool to utilize to make your dental treatment as affordable as possible for both you and your family. How Dental Insurance Works

When you pay your monthly premium, you gain access to discounts on dental treatments and procedures. Every plan works a bit differently, but here’s what you can generally expect when it comes to saving:

  • 100% coverage for preventive dental treatments.
  • 80% coverage for basic restorative procedures.
  • 50% coverage for major restorative procedures.

Ultimately, by attending your regular dental checkups and cleanings, you can prevent the need for restorative treatments in the future, as they aren’t covered at as high of a rate. However, there are still some key things to keep in mind:

  • Dental insurance plans are renewed at the beginning of every year. Your benefits will not carry over to the next year.
  • You need to meet your deductible before your coverage kicks in. Your annual maximum is the designated amount of money that your dental insurance company will agree to pay in a single year. If you don’t reach this amount, the remaining balance is returned to your insurance company.

What Is the Difference Between Dental & Medical Insurance?

Medical insurance and dental insurance seem like they would be similar, but they have multiple key differences. The main one is that dental insurance is focused on preventive care. That’s why most plans include complete coverage for cleanings and checkups. This way, patients can avoid more complex procedures, like root canals and tooth extractions.

In-Network vs. Out-of-Network

When you are deciding which dentist to go to, it is key to find out if they are in-network or out-of-network. Here’s what this means:

In-Network Coverage

When a dentist is in-network with an insurance company, this means that they have agreed on a contract to offer services at set fees. By choosing an in-network dentist, you can better maximize your benefits by paying the lowest possible out-of-pocket cost. At Atrium Family Dental of New Lenox, we are proud to be in-network with the following:

  • Delta Dental Premier
  • Cigna
  • Principal
  • BlueCross BlueShield
  • DNoA

Out-of-Network

If you have another dental insurance provider, this doesn’t mean that you are out of luck when it comes to coverage. We will also personally file claims on your behalf for any other PPO plans, maximizing deserved reimbursements. It’s our goal to help our patients receive quality care at an affordable cost!
