It would be difficult to imagine anyone saying “I think I’d look so good with braces; I simply have to go see my dentist and see if I can get fixed up with a mouth full of metal!” It just doesn’t happen. No one wants to have braces.
Of course the corollary to that is that no one wants to be afraid to smile because their teeth are crooked and unsightly. Historically, people have had to accept that there’s going to be a trade-off – wearing metal braces, sometimes for years, in exchange for looking better eventually.
The Trouble With Metal Braces
Metal braces aren’t just unsightly. If you’re an adult who wants a better smile, chances are you’d be willing to put up with a metallic look knowing that there would be a good outcome down the road. If you’re a teen, you might just say “I’ll live with my crooked teeth instead of having to contend with my friends asking why I have railroad tracks in my mouth.”
Metal braces also trap harmful bacteria and food, and no matter how vigilant you are about brushing, you may not be able to get rid of all those harmful elements. Then, once the braces are removed, you do look fabulous, for a while. And then, because of all that trapped food and bacteria, your teeth begin to decay, right in the front, where it’s visible and also not easy to correct.
Fortunately, there is a better way – Invisalign® clear aligners. With Invisalign for adults, and Invisalign Teen®, there’s no possibility of anything being trapped because there are no bands, bars, or brackets. Invisalign clear aligners are removable, so you can brush and floss. You won’t want to remove your aligners because they’re invisible. Unless you want to tell people that you’re wearing aligners, no one needs to know other than your dentist, of course.
If you’ve been neglecting your smile, or your teen has been resistant to the idea of wearing braces, there’s no longer any need to live with crooked teeth.
All you need to do to prepare for being fitted with your Invisalign clear aligners is come to us with a clean mouth – brush and floss before your visit. Then, we’ll take impressions of your teeth, and use 3-D imaging to create a series of clear aligners.
Your first set of braces will fit over your teeth as they’re currently aligned, and the final set will be the one that achieves the alignment you want. There will be a number of aligners in between the first set and the final set, and they’ll be regularly replaced according to where you are in the course of your treatment. Your teeth will be straightened gradually and gently, without discomfort. You can usually expect a series of 18-30 aligners.
Who Can Use Invisalign Clear Aligners?
If your teeth are crooked, and you don’t want to have to wear metal braces, then you’re a candidate for Invisalign. If you’ve been worrying that wearing braces could adversely affect your dental health, or result in an even worse appearance because of trapped food and bacteria causing decay, you don’t have to worry any longer. Because you can remove the Invisalign clear aligners, you don’t have to be concerned about the potential for discomfort or decay.
