Benefits of Dentures

What are the benefits of dentures? Many of us hesitate to even consider them simply because we have outdated ideas about them. It is why patients of Atrium Family Dental in New Lenox, IL will have dentures offered to them as part of a plan for restorative dentistry.

After all, dentures are not always “full” and can be what are known as “partials”. If you are hesitating to discuss dentures, remember that partials are a wonderful answer to a long list of issues. However, this is only one of the minor benefits of dentures. Let’s consider the rest:

They are made specifically to your needs – There is no such thing as a general set of dentures. They are custom-made from long-lasting and comfortable materials to fit your gum specifically. They are not your “grandparents” dentures but are instead well-fitting and often so comfortable and secure that you can eat without removing them.

Dentures Overview

When you lose all or most of your teeth on an upper or lower jaw, it affects all parts of your life. While you may think it leads to some necessary changes in the diet and nothing more, losing many teeth causes most of us to feel poorly about our smile and even avoid social situations. It can make changes in how we talk and look and it does demand radical changes to the way we eat. Fortunately, Dr. Shane Sudman of Atrium Family Dental in New Lenox, IL offers our patients many options for dentures.

As part of our restorative dentistry, we provide patients with many advanced options that can include dentures of different kinds. We like to give you different choices to be certain that you get the solutions needed. For example, we offer partial dentures for patients who have lost several teeth but not the complete set of upper or lower teeth.

Dental implants vs Dentures

As we age, many of us may lose a tooth or two to some accident or dental complication. While there is little we can do to save the tooth, there are things available to us that can restore the function and aesthetics of our smile. Here we discuss the positives and negatives of two possible solutions if you lose a tooth –  dental implants and dentures.

Dentures are sets of false or fake teeth that you place on the space of the missing tooth using some dental adhesive. Dentures require a much shorter time span to prepare compared to dental implants and less time in the dentist’s office. Dentures work best for people who have fragile gums or a weak jaw. However, the problem with dentures is that despite dental adhesives, there’s still the chance that dentures can become dislodged from your mouth which can be an embarrassing experience. You also can’t use dentures to bite into hard foods as they may break. Dentures also feel somewhat unnatural and can make speaking clearly difficult.

What to Do after a Tooth Extraction

After a tooth extraction (removal) has been done by one of our dental health experts at Atrium Family Dental, your New Lenox dentist,  it is essential to take correct care of the site to avoid infection, control bleeding and allow the gum tissue to heal well enough that it can easily accept a denture or dental implant.

Here’s what to do after you’ve experienced a tooth extraction or a wisdom tooth extraction for a happy, healthy smile:

1. You might experience tenderness after a tooth extraction – over-the-counter painkillers can easily help you with the discomfort or you might ask your New Lenox dentist for prescription painkillers if you find the discomfort to be too much.

2. Cold compresses can help keep the pain and swelling down after a tooth extraction but be sure not to overdo it.

3. It’s very important that you do not touch the extraction site, chew around the location or smoke at all. We suggest that you consume a great deal of fluids so that the site can remain moist.
