Pregnancy and Oral Health

August 18, 2015

When most women go through the stages of their pregnancy, they find themselves frequenting the doctor’s office.  While it is very important to attend all OB GYN appointments, it is never a good idea to neglect your oral health.  Taking care of your dental health during pregnancy affects both you and your child.  It is important to remember that everything that goes into your mouth, will affect your baby as well.

The number one complaint dentists report from expectant mothers is red, uncomfortable bleeding gums.  This is a common symptom which is commonly referred to as “pregnancy gingivitis.”  Much like every other pregnancy symptom, this is caused by a change in hormonal levels.

Nighttime Oral Health

The staff at Atrium Family dental recently attended the MGE Management Experts Benefit Dinner on May 30 in St. Petersburg, FL. We were joined by government officials, community leaders, and leading dental professionals to raise money to provide books for the Improving Youth Literacy Campaign in support of the Boys and Girls Clubs and Youth Programs across America.

It’s shocking to discover the literacy rates across the country and the millions of children and families it affects. If we can do just one little thing to help improve reading in children, we’re happy. After all, it helps to bond families, aids in educational learning, and is a great pastime for many.

The Journal of the American College of Cardiology has recently published a study in which heart disease patients were given statins, a type of drug designed to lower cholesterol. The study found that while the statins in high dose reduced cholesterol, the medication also reduced gum inflammation in as little as 4 weeks of treatment.

What does this mean for oral health care, dentistry and medicine in general? For one, it further provides a link between oral health care and heart disease, as the researchers believe that treating gum disease and treating high cholesterol using the same medication may mean that you avoid the risks of gum disease and the risks of high cholesterol.
